17 mile Arlington bike ride

We went on a bike ride yesterday that followed one of our usual routes and decided to take the time to create a Google map.

The ride is approximately 30 total miles.

Starting from our apartment, over the Mass Ave bridge, through Cambridge and into Harvard Square, then Fresh Pond to Arlington Center via the Minuteman bike path, to the start of the ride.

The ride has its good and bad points. The first 5 miles are easy and pleasant with a long very nice road along the Mystic Lakes.

Following this is a terrible patch of dirt roads and sidewalks near Horn Pond.

The second half is very hilly with mostly good roads.

The ride itself is mostly along non-busy roads with plenty of room for bikes. So in that sense it doesn't matter when you go but because getting there from Boston means riding through Cambridge, especially Central Square, and you're on the Minuteman bike path for a short while, it's best to go in the early morning. In fact, we left at 6:30, were on our way home at 8:30, and Heather got hit by a truck on the way home (see map). If she posts a picture I'll attach it to the marker. I guess we should have left a little earlier. :)

Heather's not dead by the way. Not that you could tell it from the frequency with which she updates her weblog. The people on Facebook know she's not dead. She posts there all the time.
